Male urinary leakage, also known as urinary incontinence, is a medical condition whereby a man experiences accidental urine leakage. It is not a disease but a symptom of a problem with the urinary tract of an individual. Incontinence occurs for many reasons, such as pressure exerted on the bladder at the wrong time or over-exertion on the bladder. Another reason is the muscles around the urethra being weak or damaged. If the bladder is not emptied completely and when it should, leaking of urine occurs. Also, if the bladder gets too full and is not emptied right away, leakage may occur. Another reason for incontinence is something causing a blockage on the urethra due to which the build of urine can happen, again causing leakage.
Urinary incontinence typically happens to older men rather than young men. However, it is not a normal part of the process of aging. There are different types of urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence can be either long-term or short-term. It can also be something caused by other health problems and related treatments. Stress incontinence is when the urine leaks due to coughing, laughing, sneezing, changing position, or lifting something heavy. Another type is called urge incontinence, which means that a person has an urge to urinate so strong that they can barely make it to the toilet, causing them to experience leakage. Incontinence of this nature can even happen with a small amount of urine in the bladder. Overactive bladder is also another type of urge incontinence, but it doesn’t happen to everyone. Overflow incontinence means that the individual has an urge to urinate but can only release a small amount. Since the bladder hasn’t been emptied, it results in urine leaks later.
Total incontinence is when someone is constantly leaking urine. They have zero control over their bladder. The muscles surrounding the urethra don’t work. Functional incontinence is when a person can’t reach the toilet on time, causing them to experience urine leaks. This condition is not typically associated with a health condition. Still, it happens because of something getting in the way of the individual or them not being able to walk to the toilet independently.
